Charbon actif catalytique

Catalytic activated carbon is engineered to go beyond standard adsorption, enabling it to achieve simultaneous contaminant capture and chemical decomposition. It breaks down hydrogen sulfide, NOₓ, and chloramines on the carbon surface without the need for chemical additives, thus becoming the preferred solution for advanced water treatment and gas purification applications.

What Is Catalytic Activated Carbon?

Catalyst Active Carbon is one of the most advanced types of active carbon engineered to carry out both sorption and catalytic degradation in one substance – a combination of traditional active carbon’s high-surface and porosities with improved surface chemistry, which allows for a direct chemical reaction on the carbon surface, with no additional chemical agents added.

Instead of conventional active carbon, which collects pollutants by means of physical absorption and holds them in their pores, PAC is active in decomposition of the target substance – by breaking the molecules and turning the pollutants into benign by-products on the carbon surface. This catalyst function can be obtained by means of a controlled surface oxidation, a special thermal treatment method, or by introducing catalysts in the course of production to produce a material that has a significantly greater reaction rate to oxidant, chlorine, and sulfur containing gases as compared to traditional carbon classes.

FCC active carbon has a wide range of applications in urban potable water processing, where it can break down chloramines and chlorine while not consuming the carbon structure. In addition, it is used in industrial waste water treatment, the ozone degradation system, the removal of hydrogen sulphide from biogas and process gas flow, and the use of Advanced Oxidation Process (AOP) in which the conventional active carbon does not offer sufficient contamination destroying properties.

This material is provided in the form of Granular Active Carbon (GAC), which enables it to be readily compatible with the current fixed bed filtration container and the Touch Absorbent Systems, with no need to modify the device.

Key Advantages of Catalytic Activated Carbon

Les défis du secteur

Chloramine resistance to standard activated carbon adsorption

Chloramines are poor adsorbability by conventional active carbon classes, and need catalytic decomposition to reach the removal efficiency required by modern drinking water quality rules.

Accelerated carbon bed exhaustion from oxidant exposure:

Constant exposure to chlorine, ozone, and other oxidants causes rapid degradation of the standard active carbon structure, reducing the lifetime of the product and increasing the rate of carbon substitution and operation costs.

Stricter drinking water disinfection byproduct regulations

Stricter levels for chloramines, trihalomethanes, and haloacetic acids in the urban water supply need a process technique that can be used to destroy the pollutants consistently, deeply instead of simply absorbing and retaining them.

Specific Use Scenarios — Catalytic Activated Carbon

Municipal Drinking Water Chloramine Removal

In many municipal water systems, chloramination has replaced free chlorine disinfection to cut down on trihalomethane formation. Nevertheless, chloramines are hardly adsorbed by standard activated carbon, which brings certain difficulties to water treatment. In contrast, catalytic activated carbon can decompose chloramines directly on its surface through a catalytic reaction, and this process requires no additional chemical reagents. It can steadily reduce chloramine content to below the regulatory limit without accelerating the consumption of activated carbon, thus becoming the optimal GAC grade for municipal drinking water filtration systems that are switching from free chlorine disinfection.

Point-of-Use and Point-of-Entry Water Filtration Systems

In household, business, and institution water filtration applications, FCC Active Carbon offers excellent chloramine and chlorine removal properties within a compact filter box and whole house system format. The extension of the lifetime compared with the standard carbon class reduces the rate of replacement – a reduction in the maintenance load and the overall property cost of the end-user working in the city’s water-supply region, which uses chlorine based disinfectant as the norm.

Industrial Wastewater Treatment and Advanced Oxidation Processes

Hydrogen sulfide is a primary contaminant in biogas and landfill gas streams, and its concentration must be reduced to low levels before the gas can be used in engines, turbines, or grid injection systems. Catalytic activated carbon directly oxidizes hydrogen sulfide into elemental sulfur or sulfate compounds within the carbon bed, which achieves effective H₂S control without the need for chemical reagent injection. This method also maintains stable removal performance under the variable H₂S concentrations and moisture conditions commonly seen in biological gas generation systems.

Biogas and Landfill Gas Hydrogen Sulfide Removal

Ozone Decomposition in Water and Air Treatment Systems

The remaining ozone in the treatment or treatment air flows shall be degraded prior to the flow of the current into the distribution system, the downstream installation, or the living area. FCC active carbon offers reliable ozone degradation via surface catalysis – conversion of the remaining ozone into oxygen while not producing a second byproduct.

Industrial Process Gas Purification and Odor Control

In the chemical industry, the pharmaceutical industry, the food processing industry, and the wastewater treatment plant, the effluent flow includes a complicated mix of VOCs, sulphur, nitrogen, and odours which need to be adsorbed and oxidized in order to be effectively controlled. FCC Active Carbon offers an enhanced elimination of such mixture of pollutants — a combination of the physical absorption capability and the surface activity to achieve a higher degree of purification compared to the standard carbon class in the Packed Bed Scrubber and the Inline-Type Gas Processing System.

Our Catalytic Activated Carbon Advantages

Catalytic Decomposition Beyond Standard Adsorption

Compared to traditional active carbon which only absorbs pollutants, FCC active carbon chemically destroys chloramines, ozone, and sulfides on the carbon surface — providing deeper purification performance with no additional chemical dosage or supplementary processing phases.

Extended Service Life That Reduces Replacement Costs

Catalyst degradation can turn oxidizing agents into benign by-products with no loss of absorption capability or degradation of pore structure – enabling a carbon bed to remain at its peak for much longer than a standard class, decreasing the substitution rate and reducing overall processing operation costs.

Drop-In Compatibility with Existing GAC Filter Systems

Provided in a standardized particle format compatible with the usual GAC requirements, FCC Active Carbon is installed straight into an existing filter container and a touch absorber – providing significant improvements in performance with no need to invest in the new facility or to disrupt operations in the course of the conversion.
