Coconut shell activated carbon

Coconut shell activated carbon is a kind of high performance absorbent material obtained from the husk of ripe coconuts by means of careful carbonation and activation. Unlike active carbon made from coal or timber, cocoa-shell materials start with a natural density of solid and tough material – which creates a unique, delicate interior pore structure.

In the process of manufacture, the coconut shell is carbonized under low oxygen conditions at elevated temperatures, and then is activated by vapor or chemical. This activation stage dramatically expands the internal surface area, creating an intricate network of micropores that can reoccupy 1,000 – 1,200 m ²/g or more. Because of this exceptional surface area, which is mostly confined to the micro-pores, the coconut shell active carbon is particularly efficient at trapping tiny organic molecules, residual chlorine, VOCs, and a broad variety of soluble contaminants.

The end product is a clean, solid, low ash carbon with uniform grain size and excellent mechanical endurance – which in real world use can be seen as a direct indicator of increased lifetime and reduced replacement rates.
