Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon

Active Carbon is a world standard for purifying potable water. It can be used to eliminate chlorine, chloramines, disinfectant by-products, flavour and odour compounds, pesticides, drugs and PFAS – providing safe, clean, regulated potable water through a city’s wastewater treatment facility, point of entry, and home filtering applications throughout the world.

What Is Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon?

Active Carbon in Potable Water Treatment is a process in which Particulate (GAC), Dust (PAC), and Specialized Active Carbon are applied in a municipal wastewater treatment facility, a distributed water distribution system, as well as a point of use filter equipment for removal of chemical contamination, flavour and odour, as well as controlled pollution from the source water prior to its delivery to the consumer.

Active carbon has been a key element in the treatment of potable water for decades, and it is becoming increasingly important as the problem of groundwater quality becomes more acute. The world’s surface and ground water is under increasing pressure from the agriculture run-off with pesticides and nitrates, the waste of sewage, the pollution of industry, and the natural flavour and odour of the natural world – such as Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborol (MIB) – which render the treated water unpalatable despite its microbiological safety. At the same time, regulators such as the U.S. EPA, European Commission, and the National Drinking Water Administration have been steadily reducing MCLs for a growing range of chemicals — the latest one that has set legally binding limits at parts per billion for PFAS. Active Carbon continues to be a proven, cost effective and workable technique to satisfy such changing regulatory requirements at municipal and lower levels.

Key Advantages of Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon

The selection of appropriate active carbon solutions for drinking water will have a direct impact on the results of water quality, compliance with regulations, and customer trust. Active Carbon provides measurable performance gains across all key aspects of the drinking water treatment task:
The properties of this property define active carbon as essential for the safety of potable water production — from the supply of water to the final tap.

Industry Challenges About Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon

Tightening Regulatory Standards for an Expanding Contaminant List

Throughout the world, MCLs are constantly being reduced, and the addition of new regulatory pollutants — PFAS — at a fraction of a trillion — is being imposed on water companies to invest in more sophisticated ACCC systems, which would have been impractical even 5 years ago.

Deteriorating Source Water Quality

Rising agriculture runoff, drug release, industry pollution, and the intensification of algae bloom have been steadily deteriorating surface and ground water quality, thus increasing the pollutant burden and processing complexity that active carbon systems have to deal with in order to ensure consistent safety of finished water.

Seasonal Taste and Odor Events Are Unpredictable

Both the algal and the actinomycete production of Geosmin and MIB cause unpredictable, fast onset, and urgent therapeutic response – a challenge for the utility to keep the active carbon capability and the operating flexibility needed to deal with an incident that could take several days or weeks.

Specific Use Scenarios — Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon

Municipal Drinking Water Plant GAC Filtration

Granular ACF is mounted as a special processing phase in a municipal wastewater treatment facility — usually located following coagulation-settling, sand-filtering — in which the source water is transported via a GAC deep stationary bed which absorbs dissolved organic matter, chlorine, disinfectant by-product precursors, pesticides, and flavour and odour compounds prior to its entry into the distribution system. The GAC contactor is constantly running at a high velocity and is regularly backwashed to eliminate the accumulated solids, while the spent carbon is removed for off-site heat activation and operation.

Powdered Activated Carbon Dosing for Emergency and Seasonal Treatment

The use of PAC is a flexible, quick-response solution to the problem of seasonal flavour and odour due to algae blooms, farm run-off, or accidental pollution of the source. PAC is injected directly into a primary flow or a processing tank that is located upstream of an existing filter phase, absorbing geosmin, MIB, pesticides, and other pollutants with no special infrastructure — allowing utilities to increase or decrease their processing strength in real-time with seasonal fluctuations in the source water quality.

PFAS Removal from Municipal Water Supplies

The PAC is the largest installation and regulated technique for removing PFAS from urban potable water, and GAC contactors that can lower PFOA, PFOS and associated long chain PFAS compounds to less than the parts per billion MCLs currently implemented by the U.S. EPA and increasingly accepted by more and more countries. Utilities that are subject to a PFAS compliance requirement deploy GAC contactors either in serial or parallel configurations to reach a desired Empty Bed Contact Time (EBCT) to be lower than the detection threshold for the purpose of removing PFAS.

Dechlorination and Disinfection Byproduct Control

Because of its long term effects on the health of the environment, chlorine and chloramines are combined with the naturally occurring organic compounds in the source water to produce THMs, HAAs, and other disinfectant by-products. Active Carbon – in GAC filtration and PAC dosage forms – offers a high efficiency of depuration and elimination of DBP precursors, which decreases the generation potential of controlled sterilization by-products and enhances the taste and beauty of final potable water supplied via a distributor.

Point-of-Use Drinking Water Filtration

Active Carbon Filters (POU) – consisting of an undersink, a counter, an in-built fridge, and a pitcher-type filter – offer a focused approach to drinking and boiling water at the end of the shipment, eliminating chlorine, chloramines, lead, VOCs, cysts, and flavour/odour compounds to a level lower than the health guide. The Carbon Block and Granular Carbon Cartridge Forms are the most widespread used in Home Water Treatment Systems worldwide, providing customers an accessible, inexpensive path to improved drinking water quality without reliance on municipal infrastructure upgrades or bottled water alternatives.

Groundwater Treatment for Small Communities and Private Supplies

Private, small-scale community, and rural water sources from the shallow ground water table often suffer from the effects of agriculture pesticides, nitrates, VOC, and – near industry or military facilities – PFAS and solvent pollution above the safe level of potable water. Active Carbon Treating Systems – Dimensions and Configurations for Low to Medium Flow Rates – effectively remove pollutants from such Distributed Water Sources, allowing Small System Operators and Privately Owners to Obtain Safe, Compliant Potable Water Quality Without Being Connected to Urban Wastewater.

Our Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon Advantages

Proven Removal of the Widest Range of Drinking Water Contaminants

Active carbon deals with a wider range of regulatory and new pollutants from chlorine, THMs and HAAs to pesticides, drugs, geosmin, MIB, and PFAS at parts per trillion, than any other disposal technique — in one operational, validated filter phase.

Regulatory-Recognized Solution for PFAS and Emerging Contaminant Compliance

The U.S. EPA, European Union Potable Water Regulatory Agency (RSI) and other relevant national bodies have specifically approved GAC fixed bed systems as an approved PFAS and micro-pollution-removing process – providing water service providers a compliance-ready, defensible technological choice aligned with current and future enforceable drinking water standards.

Scalable Across Every Treatment Scale and System Configuration

Available in granular, powdered, and block-based forms, potable water activated carbon scales ranging from domestic pitcher and undersink units to large-scale GAC contactors – providing a consistent, compliant water-quality performance across all dimensions with identical validated sorption techniques.
