What Is Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon?
Active Carbon in Potable Water Treatment is a process in which Particulate (GAC), Dust (PAC), and Specialized Active Carbon are applied in a municipal wastewater treatment facility, a distributed water distribution system, as well as a point of use filter equipment for removal of chemical contamination, flavour and odour, as well as controlled pollution from the source water prior to its delivery to the consumer.
Active carbon has been a key element in the treatment of potable water for decades, and it is becoming increasingly important as the problem of groundwater quality becomes more acute. The world’s surface and ground water is under increasing pressure from the agriculture run-off with pesticides and nitrates, the waste of sewage, the pollution of industry, and the natural flavour and odour of the natural world – such as Geosmin and 2-Methylisoborol (MIB) – which render the treated water unpalatable despite its microbiological safety. At the same time, regulators such as the U.S. EPA, European Commission, and the National Drinking Water Administration have been steadily reducing MCLs for a growing range of chemicals — the latest one that has set legally binding limits at parts per billion for PFAS. Active Carbon continues to be a proven, cost effective and workable technique to satisfy such changing regulatory requirements at municipal and lower levels.
Key Advantages of Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon
- Effective Chlorine and Disinfection Byproduct Removal: Active carbon quickly dehydrate after treatment and adsorb THMs (THMs), HAAs, and other sterilization by-products that are produced in the course of chlorine-reducing both the flavor effect of remaining disinfectants and the long term health hazards related to exposure to DBP in distributed potable water.
- Reliable Taste and Odor Control: GAC and PAC are excellent at eliminating the natural flavor and odour components from algae and actinomyces that are found in the source water tanks – the main cause of consumer complaints about the quality of urban drinking water and the main reason for the use of activated carbon equipment in water-treatment facilities around the world.
- PFAS and Emerging Contaminant Compliance: The PAC is a U.S. EPA-recognized, worldwide approved technique for removing PFOA, PFOS and associated substances from potable water, which can reliably reduce PFOA, PFOS and associated substances to less than the parts per billion currently implemented by the United States, the European Union, and the growing range of domestic regulations.
- Pesticide and Pharmaceutical Removal: Active carbon can adsorb a wide range of agricultural pesticides, herbicides, and drug compounds from the ground, thus offering a key therapeutic barrier to prevent the occurrence of chemical pollution and chronic low levels of exposure that can not be properly dealt with by conventional coagulation and filtering techniques.
- Scalable from Household to Municipal Applications: Available in granular, powdered, and block-based forms, potable water activated carbon scales from domestic pitcher and undersink units to large-scale communal GAC contactors – providing a consistent, compliant water-quality performance for each treatment scale using identical validated sorption techniques.

Our Drinking Water Treatment Activated Carbon Advantages
Proven Removal of the Widest Range of Drinking Water Contaminants
Active carbon deals with a wider range of regulatory and new pollutants from chlorine, THMs and HAAs to pesticides, drugs, geosmin, MIB, and PFAS at parts per trillion, than any other disposal technique — in one operational, validated filter phase.
Regulatory-Recognized Solution for PFAS and Emerging Contaminant Compliance
The U.S. EPA, European Union Potable Water Regulatory Agency (RSI) and other relevant national bodies have specifically approved GAC fixed bed systems as an approved PFAS and micro-pollution-removing process – providing water service providers a compliance-ready, defensible technological choice aligned with current and future enforceable drinking water standards.
Scalable Across Every Treatment Scale and System Configuration
Available in granular, powdered, and block-based forms, potable water activated carbon scales ranging from domestic pitcher and undersink units to large-scale GAC contactors – providing a consistent, compliant water-quality performance across all dimensions with identical validated sorption techniques.
