What Is Alumina foam?
The aluminium oxide foam is an open cell ceramic material made from highly pure aluminium oxide (Al₂O₃), made by a controlled reproduction method where an aluminium paste is applied to a polyurethane foam template, dried and heated. The burning of an organic template leaves a solid, 3D ceramic web that reflects the interrelationships of the initial foam – producing a light but strong structural material with precise design of holes, permeability, and surface area properties.
The resultant structure combines the intrinsic properties of aluminum oxide — exceptionally hard, heat-stable at 1,700 degrees Celsius, and strong chemical resistance — with the geometrical advantages of an open cell bubble architecture: high air volume, winding channels, and a big inner surface area. Porosity is usually measured in PPI (PPI), which generally varies between 10 PPI for high flow filter and 60 PPI for fine filter and catalyst support applications. This tuning makes it possible to accurately match the flow, filter efficiency, and heat properties required for every particular application.
Aluminum Oxide Foam has been extensively applied in casting, metallurgy, power, and advanced manufacturing sectors in which high temperature filters, heat treatment, or catalyst are needed in order to quickly degrade polymeric or metal substitutes.
Why Choose Alumina Foam?
-
Exceptional High-Temperature Performance Alumina Foam keeps the structure intact and filtering efficient at 1700 degrees Celsius – which is ideal for filtering liquid metal, high temperature gas processing, and fire-resistant insulating applications in which the usual materials will not work.
-
Superior Molten Metal Filtration The winding open cell architecture efficiently traps nonmetallic inclusions, slags, and impurities from the liquid aluminium, iron, steel, and copper alloys – remarkably increases the purity of the cast metal, its mechanical performance, and its surface finish.
-
Excellent Chemical Resistance Resistant against the impact of molten metals, slags, acids, and alkalis. Aluminium foam retains the structure and function of the product under the conditions of the chemical attack - prolonging the lifetime of the product and decreasing the substitution rate.
-
Lightweight with High Mechanical StrengthDespite of its low volume, aluminium foam provides remarkable compression and heat - it is able to withstand both mechanical and heat stress in an industrial foundry and at a high temperature.
-
Tunable Porosity for Application-Specific Performance Available over a broad PPI range, it is possible to accurately define aluminum oxide foam in order to achieve a balance between filter efficiency, flow resistance, and pressure reduction – allowing process engineers to have the control required to optimise the quality of their products as well as their operating capacity.
Industry Challenges About Alumina foam
Thermal Shock Resistance
High temperature variations in industry and high temperature may lead to heat stress fracture, which may affect the structure integrity and decrease the lifetime of aluminum oxide foam.
Mechanical Fragility During Handling
Precise Pore Size Specification
High-Temperature Chemical Attack
Consistent Porosity Across Production Batches

Why Use Our Alumina foam
Exceptional High-Temperature Stability
Aluminum Oxide Foam retains complete structure and function at temperatures up to 1,700 degrees Celsius - outperforming metal and polymeric substitutes for liquid metal filtering, high temperature gas processing, and high heat insulation applications.
Superior Filtration of Molten Metals
An interconnected open cell architecture captures nonmetallic inclusions, slags, and solid pollutants from liquid aluminium, iron, steel, and copper – delivering a significantly cleaner cast metal with improved mechanical performance and surface quality.
Strong Chemical & Corrosion Resistance
Impervious to liquid, slags, acids and alkalis, aluminum foam maintains the structure of the material under a chemical attack - prolonging the lifetime of the product, decreasing the replacement rate, and reducing the overall operating cost.
