Mercury Removal Activated Carbon

Mercury emissions require precise control. Specially formulated active carbon targets vapor phase mercury in gas treatment and combustion processes, providing high efficiency, long lifetime, and compliance with international emission standards.

What Is Mercury Removal Activated Carbon?

Mercury removal active carbon is a specialized form of active carbon engineered specifically to capture and neutralize mercury from gas and liquid flows in industrial processes. Different from normal active carbon, it is usually dipped in sulphur, iodine, or other chemical substances which significantly increase the affinity of mercury – allowing it to capture the elements of Hg (Hg) and the oxidation of mercury (Hg ²) in a highly efficient manner.

The material has been extensively applied to sectors that are exposed to mercury pollution to the environment, regulation, and operation. Commonly used are the flue gas treatment of coal fired power stations, the cleaning of natural gas, the manufacture of chlor-alkali, the disposal of waste and the disposal of petroleum products. With tighter global emissions standards — including those of the EPA’s Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS), as well as the European Union’s Industrial Emissions Directive — ACV is an indispensable part of a modern emission control system.

It can be used in a variety of physical formats, such as Granular Active Carbon (GAC) and Granular Active Charcoal, which can be used as a fixed bed adsorbent, a packaged column, or other gaseous or liquid processing system.

Key Advantages of Mercury Removal Activated Carbon

Choosing the correct ACCC level will have a direct impact on the efficiency of the ETS, the results of monitoring compliance, and the overall operational costs of the system. High Efficiency Active Carbon Removing Mercury Provides Measurable Benefits in All Key Aspects:
The properties of these properties render ACF a necessary pollutant for all industries that operate in accordance with the HG rules – from coal and natural gas treatment to chlor-alkali, refuse burning, and petroleum-refining.

Industry Challenges About Mercury Removal Activated Carbon

Multi-speciation mercury composition

Elemental mercury (Hg⁰) and oxidized mercury (Hg²⁺) coexist in industrial gas streams, which means capture solutions must be capable of handling multiple mercury forms within a single treatment system.

Increasingly stringent emission regulations

The EPA MATS, EU Industrial Emissions Directive and similar Asia and Pacific norms have been increasingly stringent, increasing the level of performance of current monitoring systems annually.

Variable mercury inlet concentrations

The amount of Hg in the process flow varies according to the composition of the feed, the burning conditions, and the operating load – which makes it hard to maintain a consistent downstream removal efficiency with a fixed system configuration.

Specific Use Scenarios — Mercury Removal Activated Carbon

Coal-Fired Power Plant Flue Gas Treatment

Mercury is emitted from the burning process as a by-product of the naturally occurring mercury in coal. Active carbon — either in a packaged stationary bed or as a powdered sorbents upstream of a cloth filter or an ESP — captures vapor phase Hg in the exhaust flow prior to its arrival at the stack, allowing the installation to comply with EPA MATS and other relevant national standards.

Natural Gas Purification and Processing

The presence of Hg in a number of natural gas pools is a direct hazard to the treatment facility – such as the melting of aluminium heat-exchangers and the contamination of the catalytic components in the lower part of the plant. Mercury de-activated carbon beds are installed in the intake ports of the gas treatment train to lower the mercury content to below ppm, to safeguard the integrity of the facility and to guarantee the quality of the product in all LNG generation, transport and petroleum-based raw materials.

Chlor-Alkali Production Off-Gas Treatment

Legacy chlor-alkali facilities that utilize the Hg battery technique produce process flows that have increased levels of Hg in both the gaseous and the liquid phases. Active Carbon Absorption Systems are utilized for the treatment of Hydrogen Flow, Ventilated Air, and Process Waste – Trapping Residual Mercury prior to Release and Supporting Compliance of Installations with Mercury Phasing and Emission Abatement Commitments in Accordance with IIR.

Waste Incineration and Thermal Treatment Off-Gas Control

Solid waste from urban areas, from healthcare and from the burning of dangerous waste, together with acidic gases, dioxins and particles, produce a complex mix of smoke that contains mercury. Mercury-Removing active carbon – usually combined with lime spray and cloth filter – offers a secure collection of mercury in a multiple pollution control system, which is designed to comply with strict emission standards applicable to waste heat treatment plants.

Petrochemical and Refinery Process Stream Purification

The presence of Hg in crude oil or hydrocarbon raw materials may pollute the flow of the process, render the catalyst inactive, and accumulate in the product fraction. Fixed Mercury-Removing Active Carbon Units are located in the Refinery Line to capture Hg prior to its arrival at the Critical Downstream Facilities – Including Hydrotreatment Reactors, Reconditioning Plants, and Product Separation Systems.

Ambient Air and Industrial Ventilation Treatment

In the treatment, treatment, or storage of mercury in an installation — such as a lab, a dental amalgam treatment facility, a fluorescent light recovery facility, and a mercury-containing apparatus — an ACCF is incorporated into the HVAC system to trap the escaping mercury vapour, thereby preserving the health of the employee and keeping the ambient air quality in the workplace within the AOU.

Our Mercury Removal Activated Carbon Advantages

High-Efficiency Mercury Capture Through Chemical Impregnation

Sulphur or iodine immersion creates selective chemisorption sites that bond mercury molecules forever — capturing both elements and oxidised ones with consistently high removal efficiency, even at the low entry concentrations in which the standard activated carbon does poorly.

Proven Compatibility Across Diverse Industrial Operating Conditions

Engineered to maintain steady absorption over varying temperatures, moisture levels, and copollutants - providing reliable Hg control in coal, gas, refuse burning, and petroleum-refining environments, with no need for system changes.

Extended Service Life That Reduces Total Treatment Cost

Optimal pore configuration and immersion chemical allow maximum amount of Hg to be carried on a single CO basis - prolonging the lifetime of the WMS, decreasing the rate of change, and reducing the long term running costs of MSE on an industrial scale.
