Mercury emissions require precise control. Specially formulated active carbon targets vapor phase mercury in gas treatment and combustion processes, providing high efficiency, long lifetime, and compliance with international emission standards.
What Is Mercury Removal Activated Carbon?
Mercury removal active carbon is a specialized form of active carbon engineered specifically to capture and neutralize mercury from gas and liquid flows in industrial processes. Different from normal active carbon, it is usually dipped in sulphur, iodine, or other chemical substances which significantly increase the affinity of mercury – allowing it to capture the elements of Hg (Hg) and the oxidation of mercury (Hg ²) in a highly efficient manner.
The material has been extensively applied to sectors that are exposed to mercury pollution to the environment, regulation, and operation. Commonly used are the flue gas treatment of coal fired power stations, the cleaning of natural gas, the manufacture of chlor-alkali, the disposal of waste and the disposal of petroleum products. With tighter global emissions standards — including those of the EPA’s Mercury and Air Toxics Standards (MATS), as well as the European Union’s Industrial Emissions Directive — ACV is an indispensable part of a modern emission control system.
It can be used in a variety of physical formats, such as Granular Active Carbon (GAC) and Granular Active Charcoal, which can be used as a fixed bed adsorbent, a packaged column, or other gaseous or liquid processing system.
Key Advantages of Mercury Removal Activated Carbon
- High-Selectivity Mercury Capture Across Speciation Types: Chemical immersion with sulphur or iodine-based compounds creates reactive bonding sites with a high affinity for Hg — allowing reliable capture of both Hg (Hg) and Hg (Hg ³) at low entry levels, which are not sufficient by mere physical absorption to reach the regulatory conformity threshold in the smoke and process gas treatment applications.
- Broad Operating Condition Compatibility: Engineered to maintain adsorption performance across a wide range of temperatures, humidity levels, and co-contaminant gas compositions — including high-SO ₂, high-humidity flue gas environments in power generation as well as variable process conditions that exist in natural gas purification and petrochemical refining operations.
- Regulatory Compliance Enablement: It offers an established and verified system to comply with the HG limit values in key international regulations – such as EPA MATS and EU Industrial Emissions Directive – which will lower the risk of compliance and allow them to operate in the context of tighter emission standards, but do not require any substantial process re-engineering.
- Extended Bed Service Life and Reduced Operating Cost:Optimal pore configuration and immersion chemical allow for maximum HG loading per CO - prolonging the operating time of the transition period and lowering the overall cost of HG control compared with other techniques in high throughput industry.
- Flexible Physical Forms for Direct System Integration: It is available in both granular and granular forms over a variety of grain sizes – enabling direct incorporation into an existing fixed bed adsorbent container, a packed column, and a sorbents without requiring any major facility changes or process failure.
- Secure Mercury Retention with Minimal Re-emission Risk: Once it has been absorbed, it will be chemically attached to the carbon matrix instead of physical retention – greatly lowering the risk of reemitting when there is a change in temperature or a disturbance in the system, and making it easier to deal with, transport and dispose of spent carbon in accordance with the relevant hazardous waste rules.

Our Mercury Removal Activated Carbon Advantages
High-Efficiency Mercury Capture Through Chemical Impregnation
Sulphur or iodine immersion creates selective chemisorption sites that bond mercury molecules forever — capturing both elements and oxidised ones with consistently high removal efficiency, even at the low entry concentrations in which the standard activated carbon does poorly.
Proven Compatibility Across Diverse Industrial Operating Conditions
Engineered to maintain steady absorption over varying temperatures, moisture levels, and copollutants - providing reliable Hg control in coal, gas, refuse burning, and petroleum-refining environments, with no need for system changes.
Extended Service Life That Reduces Total Treatment Cost
Optimal pore configuration and immersion chemical allow maximum amount of Hg to be carried on a single CO basis - prolonging the lifetime of the WMS, decreasing the rate of change, and reducing the long term running costs of MSE on an industrial scale.
