What is Biogas Activated Carbon?
Methane Active Carbon is a specially chosen class of active carbon, which is applied throughout the cycle of cleaning and upgrading of biogas, to eliminate a complicated mix of noxious contaminants which pollute virgin methane at the place of manufacture. Raw biogas – produced by the anaerobic digestion of organic raw materials such as farm refuse, food residues, urban solid garbage, landfill gas, and sewage sludge – is a major energy source, but it also has a substantial amount of hydrogen sulphide (H₂S), siloxanes, halogens (VOCs), ammonia, and water, which need to be eliminated in order to make safe and efficient use of the gas.
If not addressed, these pollutants will have significant operating and business implications. Hydrogen sulphide erodes metal pipes, motors, and heat exchangers at increasing speeds. Siloxanes are deposited as abrasive silica on burning surfaces, resulting in early engine wear and expensive unscheduled maintenance. Halogens and VOCs may be toxic to the catalyst and the EGR system. Taken together, such impurities render crude biogas unfit to comply with the requirements of the Biomethane Network Injection, Cogeneration (CHP), and Vehicle Fuel Certification – so that efficient cleaning is not an option but an operational and commercial necessity.
Active carbon combines high absorption capability, chemical versatility, and the ability to adapt to the process so that no other treatment material can match the whole biogas contamination spectrum.
Key Advantages of Biogas Activated Carbon
- Highly Effective H₂S Removal: Active carbon - especially an impregnation grade of K- or KMnO - enables highly efficient absorption of H2S even at high entry levels, thereby shielding the downstream motor, turbine, and heat-exchanger from accelerated corrosion.
- Reliable Siloxane Capture Across Operating Conditions: The well-developed micro-poro- and mesoscopic architecture of the superior methane carbon classes guarantees efficient absorption of siloxane over a variety of methane compositions, flow rates, and moisture levels – preventing the formation of silica on the combustion surface and the significant extension of engine repair intervals.
- Broad Contaminant Coverage in a Single Treatment Stage: At the same time, active carbon deals with H₂S, siloxanes, VOCs, halogens, and remaining water in one fixed bed system, which makes it simpler to process methane and to decrease the need for separate cleaning units.
- Compatible with Impregnation for Enhanced Performance:Chemical enhancement of standard active carbon can be performed through potassium permanganate, potassium iodide, or amine impregnation to target specific contaminants — particularly H₂S and mercury — at removal efficiencies that physical adsorption alone cannot achieve, providing a tailored solution for challenging biogas compositions.
- Supports Biomethane Certification and Regulatory Compliance: Active Carbon Cleaning System is a recognised and demonstrated way to meet the requirements of European EN16723, CHP Generator Producer Specification, and Vehicle Fuel Quality Rules in World Markets.

Our Biogas Activated Carbon Advantages
Multi-Contaminant Removal in a Single Treatment Stage
Active carbon simultaneously absorbs H₂S, siloxanes, VOCs and halogens in a single solid bed system, thus avoiding the necessity of a plurality of separate cleaning units, and substantially reducing the complexity, size, and cost of the biogas processing train.
Impregnation-Enhanced Performance for Demanding Biogas Compositions
Both standard and chemical immersion active carbon classes — including KSI and KMP variants — deliver tailored removal efficiency for high-concentration H₂S and trace contaminants, ensuring consistent gas quality output even as feedstock composition and inlet contaminant levels
Proven Pathway to Biomethane Compliance and CHP Protection
Active Carbon Cleaning System is an internationally accepted solution to meet the Biomethane Grid Injection Standard and CHP Engine Producer Gas Quality Norms.
