- Activated Alumina Desiccant
Active aluminum oxide dehydrator, from heat-free compressed air driers and gas-dehydrators to air-separating and petroleum-based treatment plants, provides a deep, dependable water-removing capability – providing a high crushing strength, a steady absorption capability and complete regeneration in the most demanding ongoing industry drying operations.
What Is Activated Alumina Desiccant?
Activated alumina desiccant is a highly porous type of aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃), which is specially processed to form a large internal surface area and an interconnected pore network. This structure enables it to adsorb water molecules from gas and liquid streams with high efficiency. Produced via the controlled dehydration of aluminum hydroxide, activated alumina desiccant usually has a surface area ranging from 200 to 360 m²/g, which provides the necessary adsorption capacity for deep drying applications in various industrial processes.
Different from single-use desiccant materials, activated alumina desiccant can be fully regenerated thermally. It is heated to a controlled temperature between 150°C and 300°C to remove the adsorbed moisture, thereby restoring the material to its original adsorption capacity. This regenerable feature makes it the preferred desiccant for continuous industrial drying systems, where long service life, predictable performance, and low per-cycle operating cost are key operational priorities.
Activated alumina desiccant is widely used in compressed air drying systems, natural gas and liquefied natural gas (LNG) dehydration, petrochemical process gas drying, air separation unit feed preparation, instrument air treatment, and industrial liquid-phase dehydration applications. Its combination of deep drying performance, mechanical durability, and regenerability makes it the standard desiccant medium in fixed-bed pressure swing adsorption (PSA) and temperature swing adsorption (TSA) dryer systems across the process industries.
Key Advantages of Activated Alumina Desiccant
-
Deep Dew Point Depression for Critical Drying Applications: Under appropriate operating conditions, activated alumina desiccant can stably achieve outlet dew points as low as -40°C to -70°C, which fully meets the strict moisture specifications required for instrument air systems, air separation feed gas preparation, and sensitive petrochemical and pharmaceutical process gas streams.
-
Full Thermal Regenerability for Continuous Low-Cost Operation: Contrary to the degradation of the silica gel or the molecular screen desiccant, the active aluminum oxide retains its ability to adsorb steadily over the course of tens of thousands of pressurized and regenerative cycles – providing a predictable long term performance and a significant reduction in the cost of replacing the desiccant during the ongoing PSA and TSA drying process.
-
High Mechanical Strength Resistant to Attrition and Crush Failure: Made to a high compression strength standard, active aluminum oxide desiccant can withstand the mechanical stresses of pressurized, decompressed, and gas flow rates in a fixed bed dryer container – minimizing the formation of fines, bed channeling, and pressure drop rise during long operating times in a high cycle CNG and GAS-DRYING system.
-
Broad Operating Condition Compatibility Across Temperature and Pressure Ranges: Active Aluminum Oxide Desiccant Can Be Used in Various Input Temperatures, Pressures, and Humidity Levels. Active Aluminum Oxide Desiccant Keeps Stable Wet Absorption Capability in Various Operational Environments Typically Used in Industrial, Natural, Natural Gas Collecting Operations, and Process Gas Treating Plants at Site and Refinery Sites.
-
Chemical Stability in Hydrocarbon and Acid Gas Environments: The intrinsic chemical inertia of active aluminum oxide enables it to degrade in the presence of light hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, and medium concentrations of acidic gases – preserving the structure and absorption properties in the flow of natural gas and petroleum products that are not chemically stable.

Deep Dew Point Performance Across Demanding Drying Applications
Active aluminum oxide desiccant consistently achieves exit dew points as low as - 40 ℃ - 70 ° C providing the deep humidity removal needed by the instrumentation air system, the air-separating feed preparation, and the sensitive petrol-chemical process flow for which the humidity specification is essential.
Full Thermal Regenerability for Long Service Life and Low Operating Cost
Different from disposable drying agents, active aluminum oxide recovers the entire absorption capability by means of a controlled heat recovery - keeping a steady drying performance over several tens of millions of absorption and recovery cycles, and a significant reduction in the rate of exchange of the desiccant and the overall operational cost for the PSA and the TSA drying system.
High Crush Strength Resistant to Mechanical Degradation in High-Cycle Systems
Made to a high-compression strength standard, active aluminum oxide desiccant can withstand the repetitive pressurisation, decompressing, and gas-stream stresses of a continuous dryer operating - in compression and industry gas-drying applications, to minimise the formation of fines, flow of the bed, and an increase in pressure.
