Granular Activated Carbon

Granular activated carbon (GAC) is characterized by its well developed porous structure, high mechanical strength and superior regenerative ability. Designed to be used in a fixed bed filter, it provides a continuous, long-lasting absorption capability for cleaning, air-treating, and industrial processes.

What Is Granular Activated Carbon?

Granular activated carbon (GAC) is an activated carbon that has a wide variety of applications and has an uneven or even grain diameter, usually between 0.2 and 5 mm. It is made from a wide variety of raw materials—including coal, coconut shells, timber, and other carbon-rich feedstocks—by means of controlled carbonation and vapor or chemical activation processes that create an extensive web of micropores, mesopores, and macropores in every carbon grain.

Contrary to PAC, which is injected directly into the process stream, PAC is mainly used in fixed-bed sorption containers, filtration towers, and packaged-bed systems in which the water or gas to be handled is constantly moved across a fixed carbon bed. Such a structure permits prolonged, continuous contact with the carbon surface, which can be maintained at high efficiency for long operating periods. Granular activated carbon beds are usually capable of thermal or chemical regeneration and are reused several times prior to the need for replacement, thus providing a highly cost-effective long-term solution for continuing therapy.

Why Choose Granular Activated Carbon?

Industry Challenges About Granular Activated Carbon

Gradual Adsorption Capacity Decline

The granular activated carbon absorption ability is reduced with the saturation of the active site during the long operating period, which needs to be monitored promptly and planned to replace or regenerate in order to keep the same level of therapy.

Biological Fouling in Water Treatment

In liquid phase applications, the microorganisms in the GAC beds may lead to biological degradation, which poses operating problems which need regular sterilization procedures and meticulous management of the system.

Limited Effectiveness Against Certain Contaminants

For low molecular weight inorganic compounds, some heavy metals and high polar materials, GAC has a lower absorption rate, which usually needs additional processing techniques to remove pollutants comprehensively.

Channeling Risk in Fixed-Bed Systems

The non-uniform distribution of fluid in a packed carbon bed will result in favorable flow paths, which will decrease the effective contact time of the process flow with the carbon surface, which will eventually affect the handling performance.

Why Use Our Granular Activated Carbon

High Mechanical Hardness & Attrition Resistance

GAC's hard grain architecture can withstand the physical pressures of running continuously, back washing, and repeatedly regenerating cycles – to minimise the production of carbon dioxide and to preserve the integrity of the bed for prolonged use.

Excellent Regeneration Capability

Different from PAC, Granular activated carbon is capable of thermal regeneration and reutilization several times, greatly cutting down on the long term material consumption and the overall property cost of high volume processing.

Broad-Spectrum Contaminant Removal

GAC is effective in adsorption of organic matter, residual chlorine, VOCs, odour, taste - inducing materials, and many other industrial micro-pollutants in liquid and gas phase.
