What Is Phosphoric Acid Activated Carbon?
Phosphate Active Carbon is a chemical active carbon which is obtained by impregnating a carbon-containing feedstock – usually wood, sawdust, or lignocellulose – with phosphate (H), PO (CO), and then subjected to a controlled heat treatment at a temperature generally between 400oC and 800oC, during activation, the phosphate can be used as a desiccant and an activator, penetrating into the feedstock structure, suppressing the formation of the tar, and catalyzing the evolution of a highly porous inner structure. Subsequently, the active carbon is cleaned thoroughly to eliminate the remaining phosphate and its derivatives prior to drying, sizing and preparation for final use.
The process of chemical activation with phosphate is especially suitable for wood based raw materials, in which the active carbon has been continuously produced with extremely large BET surface area – usually more than 1500 meters per gram – and the pore diameter profile strongly weighted towards the middle hole. This mesopore-dominant structure is the defining property of PAC, which distinguishes it from steam activated or zinc chloride active alternatives. Rich mesopores allow fast absorption dynamics and high efficient trapping of medium-to-large-molecular-weight organic compounds, which makes phosphate active carbon a preferred material for applications in which high molecular pollution elimination, decoloring, and liquid phase cleaning are the main processing goals.
Why Choose Phosphoric Acid Activated Carbon?
- Exceptionally High BET Surface Area — Phosphate's chemical activation system has always resulted in a surface area that is far greater than that which can be achieved by only using steam, thereby maximising the amount of active adsorption sites that can be collected by the concentration of pollutants in a given amount of carbon.
- Mesopore-Rich Structure for Macromolecular Adsorption — Mainly mesoporous porous structures allow high efficiency in absorbing big organic molecules, colour bodies, tannins, and other complicated organic compounds that are not efficiently contained by micro - allowing them to be the first choice for decoloring and liquid cleaning.
- Superior Performance in Decolorization Applications — Generally considered to be the industry's leading carbon source for decoloring of sugar, bleaching of edible oil, cleaning of medicines, and clarifying drinks.
- Excellent Adsorption Kinetics in Liquid-Phase Systems — Open Mesoscopic Networks are conducive to rapidly diffusing dissolved pollutants from the solution to the internal carbon, thus decreasing the need for contact time and increasing the production rate in both bulk and successive liquid phase handling operations.
- Precise Pore Engineering Through Process Control — Phosphate Activation Techniques provide extraordinary tuning – Pore Diameter Distribution and Surface Chemical Properties can be accurately adapted to the particular contamination profile and use needs by regulating the dipping rate, the active temperature, and the retention time.

Why Use Our Phosphoric Acid Activated Carbon
Well-Developed Mesoporous Structure
The activation of phosphate gives rise to mesoporosities – voids in the 2-50-nanometers-allowing effective absorption of high-molecular-weight organic compounds, pigments, and colours that are not efficiently captured by micropore-dominant carbons.
Broad Molecular Weight Adsorption Range
In phosphate active carbon, the combination of micro-pores and mesopores allows for efficient absorption over a broad range of molecular sizes, ranging from tiny organic molecules to big polymers and high molecular weight pollutants.
Excellent Performance in Batch Liquid-Phase Processing
The PAC is ideal for bulk processing operations - such as sugar refinery, juice clarifying and API cleaning - to provide accurate, adjusted dosage and quick absorption reactions in a mixing tank handling system.
