What Is Powdered Activated Carbon?
Powdered Active Carbon (PAC) is a fine grinding active carbon with generally 10-150 micrometers in diameter – much less than the granular or granulated active carbon. It is made from a wide range of raw materials such as coal, timber, coir, and peat, which are treated by carbonation and activation to create an extensive inner surface area and high availability of pore net optimized for fast adsorption dynamics.
The distinctive feature of PAC is that it has a very high outer surface area compared to the size of the grain. This physical characteristic allows for very rapid contact with the surface of the carbon with its surrounding fluid or gas phase pollutants, which is why PAC is one of the most flexible and flexible sorbent forms available. In contrast to the fixed bed granules, PAC is usually injected directly into the process flow – the water-treating basin, the mud reactor, or the exhaust pipe – and then, once the absorption has been finished, the separation is performed by settling, filtering, or coprecipitation. Such a flexible dosage allows PAC to be particularly suitable for applications where there is a need for a quick reaction, a change in the processing strength, or a short time limit for the use of a fixed bed.
Why Choose Powdered Activated Carbon?
- Rapid Adsorption Kinetics — PAC has a fine grain size that can maximise the available surface area and minimise the diffusion route length, which allows for considerably more rapid absorption of pollutants than the particulate active carbon - which is crucial in the time-critical handling and acute dosage situations..
- Flexible, On-Demand Dosing — PAC is available for direct addition of PAC to an existing processing system, with no special adsorbent container or infrastructure investment, enabling the operator to adjust the dosage speed up or down in real-time depending on the variation of the pollutant load or the seasonal variation of the water quality.
- Effective Against Taste, Odor, and Micropollutants — Extensively demonstrated for removing Geosmin, 2-Methyl Borates (MIB), drug residues, pesticides, and disinfectant byproducts in drinking water processing, PAC provides a robust response to the micro-pollutants that are hard to deal with by traditional methods only.
- Seamless Integration into Existing Processes — PAC does not need to be modified significantly, so that it is a cost effective way to improve the removal of pollutants in the absence of capital intensive infrastructure improvements for the wastewater treatment plant, the industrial waste management system, and the smoke treatment installation.
- Broad Raw Material and Grade Selection — Available in wood, coal, and cod-shell variations with different pore profiles and active levels, PAC can accurately meet the desired pollutant properties and process chemical needs in many different sectors.
Industry Challenges About Powdered Activated Carbon
Dust Generation & Handling Risks
Single-Use Limitation
Separation & Filtration Demands
Once administered, the PAC has to be completely isolated from the treated water or process flow, which requires an effective filtering or settling system which increases the complexity of the treatment facility and the expense thereof.
Dosing Precision Requirements
Limited Effectiveness in Fixed-Bed Systems
Storage Sensitivity
Raw Material Quality Variability
Why Use Our Powdered Activated Carbon
Exceptional Adsorption Speed
Ultra fine grain diameter of PAC is used to maximise surface contamination and to facilitate fast absorption dynamics. This makes it a prime option for time-critical therapy situations in which quick, measurable results are needed within a few minutes of administration.
No Fixed-Bed Infrastructure Required
Compared to GAC, PAC does not need a special filtration tower or a fixed bed system, which greatly reduces the cost of capital and allows it to be used in places where there is limited space or budgetary.
Wide Raw Material Compatibility
Made of coal, timber, coir, or bamboo raw materials, PAC is available in a formulation that is designed to satisfy specified aperture, surface area, and purity criteria – providing tailor-made properties for special industry and regulation.
