What Is titanium dioxide for paper?
Titanium dioxide (TiO₂) is a kind of function additive which has wide application in paper-making. As a white inorganic pigment, it is incorporated into paper, or applied as a coating pigment to deliver exceptional whiteness, brightness, and opacity. Different from other mineral fillers, TiO₂ is able to perform at very low adding levels, but also yield measurable improvements in optical properties – making it a technological and economical asset in contemporary paper production.
In paper production, two primary crystal forms are used: rutile and anatase. Rutile TiO₂ provides excellent transparency and weatherproof properties, making it a prime candidate for printers, wrappers, and special applications. Anatase grade, due to its softer grain structure, is generally chosen for tissue and some coated paper grades for which surface smoothness is a priority. The two classes are designed so that they are evenly distributed in the base of the paper, so that they can be evenly formed and printed on a high speed production line.
Key Advantages of Titanium Dioxide for Paper
-
Outstanding Opacity — TiO₂ has one of the highest refractive indices of any white pigment (approximately 2.7 for rutile), allowing it to scatter light more effectively than calcium carbonate or kaolin. Even at low loading levels, it greatly decreases the performance of thin and light papers.
-
Superior Brightness and Whiteness —Improves ISO luminance and CIE white. Achieves high quality quality, office paper, and packing plates.
-
Improved Print Quality — Increased transparency and smoothness of the surface are direct benefits of more pronounced ink retention, improved colour contrast, and decreased ink loss – essential for high-resolution digital and offset printing applications.
-
Lightweight Paper Enablement —Through the maximization of the opacity for each gram of filling, the titanium dioxide enables the producer to lower the base weight at the expense of the paper quality and the cost of the material conservation and the sustainability objectives.
-
Coating Compatibility — TiO₂ is a seamless integration of both the size and the blade paint formula. It can be used in conjunction with other paints such as GCC and clay to optimise the rheological properties of the paint and final use.
-
Consistency in Production — The stability of the chemistry and the small grain size distribution promote predictable runnability, decrease the variation on the paper mill and increase the total productivity.

Our titanium dioxide for paper Advantages
Unmatched Opacity and Brightness
With one of the highest refractive indices among white pigments, TiO₂ delivers superior light scattering efficiency, achieving exceptional sheet opacity and ISO brightness even at low addition levels — outperforming conventional fillers like calcium carbonate and kaolin in optical performance.
Versatile Across All Paper Grades and Processes
From wet-end filling and surface sizing to blade coating and specialty paper production, TiO₂ integrates seamlessly into diverse papermaking processes and formulations, making it a reliable performance pigment for printing papers, packaging boards, tissue, décor, and functional specialty grades.
Supports Lightweight and Sustainable Paper Production
Through maximum transparency for each filling unit, TiO₂ allows producers to cut base weight and total material consumption at the expense of paper quality – in direct support of sustainable objectives, lower raw material costs, and compliance with stricter environment requirements throughout the paper supply chain.
