Columnar Activated Carbon

High performance column active carbon has a homogeneous cylinder shape, a large surface area and a good mechanical integrity. Suitable for cleaning of the gas, the recovery of the solvent, the air processing, and the cleaning of the PSA – to achieve the same absorption effect, the production of small fines and the reliability of the long term operation.

What Is Columnar Activated Carbon

Column active carbon – also known as extrusion active carbon – is an exact engineered type of active carbon made by pressing the carbon paste into the mold to create homogeneous cylinder pillars, generally between 0.8 and 4 mm in diameter. Raw materials, usually charcoal, coir or wood based carbon, are mixed with adhesive, extrude into cylinder shape, and then carbonization and activation, resulting in the formation of porous structure. Controlled production procedures lead to a high degree of uniformity in geometric, density and performance across each column of a lot.

Column active carbon is characterized by geometry homogeneity. Different from the irregular grain active carbon, the cylinder type creates a high degree of orderly packing in the adsorbent container, which results in a predictable and even flow rate or gas profile, minimum flow, and steady, low-pressure-drop properties across the entire bed. This allows column active carbon to be the preferred form for gas phase sorption systems, in which a constant flow rate and minimum resistance is essential to the effectiveness and operation of the system. The smoothness of the surface and the superior mechanical strength also greatly decreases the amount of dirt and grain wear in the process of processing, filling and operating – a useful benefit in the context of sensitivity to industry and environment.

Why Choose Columnar Activated Carbon?

Industry Challenges About Columnar Activated Carbon

Extrusion Quality Consistency

Keeping the size of the balls, the length, and the density constant over a wide range of production needs to be controlled precisely because the size mismatch has a direct impact on the filling, the flow and the absorption properties of the particles.

Binder Selection & Impact on Pore Structure

If not properly prepared, the binder applied in extruding may partly seal the micro-holes, thus decreasing the effective surface area and absorbing ability of the finished active product.

Higher Production Cost

Compared with granular active carbon, the extruding and forming process increases the production complexity and cost, making the column-active carbon a less cost-effective alternative in cost-sensitive commodity markets.

Mechanical Degradation Under Thermal Cycling

Repeatedly heating and cooling in the process of heat recovery may cause microfracture in the grain structure, decrease the mechanical strength and enhance the formation of fine in the adsorber.

Limited Liquid-Phase Application Suitability

Column active carbon is mainly optimized for gas phase absorption, and does not work well in liquid phase processing systems, which provide excellent mass transfer properties in either granular or powdered form.

Why Use Our Columnar Activated Carbon

Low Dust & Fines Generation

Column active carbon has a much smaller amount of dust as compared to particulate substitutes, which is a prime option for sensitive gas-cleaning systems, pressure-swing adsorber installations, as well as those that require strict control of carbon transport or downstream pollution.

High Mechanical Strength & Hardness

Extruding and activating processes produce a pellet of extraordinary crushing strength and wear resistant properties that preserve the structure's integrity by repeatedly pressurizing, decompressing and heat-regenerating cycles with minimum physical deterioration

Excellent Regeneration Stability

Column active carbon is able to retain the structure and absorption ability by means of several heat recovery cycles, providing an advantageous long term performance to cost ratio in the case of continuous industrial gas cleaning.

Related Applications

Column active carbon has been extensively used in various gas phase treating and purifying processes, in which the structure of the structure is consistent, the amount of dust generated is small, and the absorption capacity is high. The homogeneous shape of the granules and the high mechanical strength of the particles enable it to be used in either the continuous fixed bed or the cycle pressure swing adsorption. The applications below cover the most established uses of column active carbon across industry and environment.
