What Is Columnar Activated Carbon
Column active carbon – also known as extrusion active carbon – is an exact engineered type of active carbon made by pressing the carbon paste into the mold to create homogeneous cylinder pillars, generally between 0.8 and 4 mm in diameter. Raw materials, usually charcoal, coir or wood based carbon, are mixed with adhesive, extrude into cylinder shape, and then carbonization and activation, resulting in the formation of porous structure. Controlled production procedures lead to a high degree of uniformity in geometric, density and performance across each column of a lot.
Column active carbon is characterized by geometry homogeneity. Different from the irregular grain active carbon, the cylinder type creates a high degree of orderly packing in the adsorbent container, which results in a predictable and even flow rate or gas profile, minimum flow, and steady, low-pressure-drop properties across the entire bed. This allows column active carbon to be the preferred form for gas phase sorption systems, in which a constant flow rate and minimum resistance is essential to the effectiveness and operation of the system. The smoothness of the surface and the superior mechanical strength also greatly decreases the amount of dirt and grain wear in the process of processing, filling and operating – a useful benefit in the context of sensitivity to industry and environment.
Why Choose Columnar Activated Carbon?
- Uniform Geometry for Consistent Bed Performance — Accurately controlled cylinder configuration guarantees a homogenous filling density and air flow in the entire adsorber bed, removing the channeling influence and providing a predictable, repeatable absorption capability over the entire bed volume.
- Low Pressure Drop for Energy-Efficient Operation — Column active carbon has an orderly filling configuration that results in a substantially lower pressure drop than an irregular granular carbon, thus decreasing the power consumed by the blower and the fan in a large gas phase processing system.
- Exceptional Mechanical Strength and Low Dust — High compression strength and smooth surface to minimise the formation of particulate matter and fine formation in shipping, container loading and operating circulation – to safeguard the downstream facilities and to preserve the clean flow of the process.
- Optimized for Gas-Phase Adsorption Applications —Column active carbon is a prime option for VOC recovery, solvent recovery, exhaust gas processing, hydrogen cleaning, and breathing protective filtering systems that demand accurate gas phase properties.
- Consistent Quality and Specification Compliance — Squeeze production procedures provide strict control of the size of the cylinder, the volume of the volume, the rigidity and the activity levels, allowing the use of a reliable standard to be used in the regulatory sectors, such as the production of medicines, the processing of foodstuffs, and the ventilation of the nuclear plant.

Binder Selection & Impact on Pore Structure
Higher Production Cost
Mechanical Degradation Under Thermal Cycling
Limited Liquid-Phase Application Suitability
Why Use Our Columnar Activated Carbon
Low Dust & Fines Generation
Column active carbon has a much smaller amount of dust as compared to particulate substitutes, which is a prime option for sensitive gas-cleaning systems, pressure-swing adsorber installations, as well as those that require strict control of carbon transport or downstream pollution.
High Mechanical Strength & Hardness
Extruding and activating processes produce a pellet of extraordinary crushing strength and wear resistant properties that preserve the structure's integrity by repeatedly pressurizing, decompressing and heat-regenerating cycles with minimum physical deterioration
Excellent Regeneration Stability
Column active carbon is able to retain the structure and absorption ability by means of several heat recovery cycles, providing an advantageous long term performance to cost ratio in the case of continuous industrial gas cleaning.
